I also would like the cheapest but gives you good sound quality option. Yeah I know I am asking for a lot but what are people using for mobile recording?

I splurged for a Marantz PMD660 for my mobile recoding and by all accounts, it exceeds my expectations. It has two mic ports (with phantom power). An interal stereo mic, which works great. It is DC or battery powered (4 AA), and even with the batteries in, is very light weight. It's about the size of a medium paperback book.
The included 64 MB CF card records an hour of content, whereas a 1 GB card records a whopping 18 hours.
Mac and PC compatable. Creates .mp3 or .wav files.
Not the cheapest solution, but a high quality one.
i got the iriver 890. there are now 2 versions of the "bios" you can flash on the device. One makes the iriver perform like a flash hard drive (UMD), the other makes you use the iriver software to transfer files.
some of my testing and research has shown:
1. the UMD version is nice if you are going to use the device to actually listen to music because it makes file transfers drag and drop. it also make the recorder record directly to mp3 format. but if you are using the iriver strictly for recording, this version is a bad idea. there are limits placed on the sound quality of recordings and i noticed when you record using the internal microphone, there is a clicking noise (almost like an egg timer) that goes on in the background.
2. the other version uses the iriver software to transfer files. it is believed that the file tranfers are much faster when you use that method. The recording bitrates are not crippled in this version either. i use it and i think it is version 1.29
Just some things to think about when you finally get your player. I did extensive research on various iriver message boards to collect this info.
enjoy the player - it's awesome.
Here is the link for the UMS 1.28 firmware (current): http://www.iriver.com/html/support/download/sudw_view.asp?searchProductIdx=34&searchCategoryIdx=1&searchString=ums&page=1&idx=656&tmpSearchProductIdx=&tmpSearchCategoryIdx=&tmpSearchString=
The recording limit on this firmware is 96 kbps which isn't really bad. I can't imagine you will get much improvement from voice frequencies recording above that. If you are adding music in after the fact you can encode higher. The transfer is a bit slower as was mentioned but I didn't find it a big deal myself. You can go back and forth, so don't feel restricted from trying both firware versions. I like the UMS firmware much better personally because, at least on Windows, the iRiver software is not very well written. I haven't experienced the clicking issue so I can't speak to that.
Enjoy the iRiver, they are great!

Yeah iriver is a must. Especially cause you can find the older models for very cheap and they record at an excellent quality. I dont recommend the built in mic, cause it picks up every little touch of the recorder. And dont use the ipod with the mic thing in it, the sound quality is terrible and annoying.
It is a big pain in the ass as it does not convert to MP3 so you have to do all this download crap and not that happy with it but it dont sound that bad. iRiver sounds good even with the internal mic and the iPod with a Griffin Mic also sounds good to me so far. Hope this may help someone.
I see that there is a new one available: the 799 model. Does your 795 have a microphone port, or do you use the internal mic to record remotely?
iRivers are the best for moble recording right now. I have the 795. Check out the gear page on my yeastradio.com site and you'll see it on there.
I will be mobile by next Monday then....now what to sell......that Xbox is collecting dust!
