anyone have a suggestion about a good mic to purchase (or where)? we're recording on a powerbook right now (in garageband) thru the built in mic, but would like to get a real mic for better quality, intimate sound. also, would we need 2 of them, since we do the show together, or how does that work?

thanks, we don't mean to sound retarded! just wanted to ask the experts. - Rob & David

I just got a new Shure mic, which is beautiful -- the so-called "Elvis" mic & it sounds gorgeous. One thing though -- on my Powerbook, I needed to boost the mic with phantom power to get good sound; the Powerbook didn't work well with anything plugged in directly. I used to use a cheapie $10 mic running through an iMic USB, but when I upgraded to the Shure, I got an M-Box to power it. Right now Guitar Center in San Francisco is selling off all their old M-Boxes at half price -- $250 -- to make room for the new ones. They come with Pro Tools, as well, which is sort of overkill for podcasting, but still. They were sweet to me & my endless questions.

I second all that AJ said. And recommend Guitar Center as a great place to find stuff. Also, look on Craigslist. Bands and musicians are always selling stuff. You probably want a stereo mic with a battery in it (cardioid is the term). Look into the M-Audio Mobile Pre as a nice mixer for pretty cheap (about 100 bucks). You'll need something to adjust levels, etc. Good luck!

yes you should get 2...mics...will need some sorta spliter...visit a microcenter or somekinda music store in your area and just talk the stupid saleswhores leg off and just tell them what your doing ..they..should be able to help unless they are a total dumbass. Just dont spend your yearly salary on the crap...however ...if you want to go all out ...i would suggest getting a mixer as well...check out the post by Zilla about a usb mixer..that might help!
