Hey all,

I am thinking of getting an iRiver but don't have much money. What's the smallest size you think I would need to record an hour worth of material? Since I already have an iPod, I would only be using the iRiver for recording.

Also: when you record to the iRiver, does it have a built in mic or do you hook a mic to it (line-in)?

Thanks!

thanks for that info! i just got the iFP-890 for 60 bucks on Ebay. I see it has a line in cable on it. Does anyone use an actual mic with theirs or do you just use the built in one?

If you do use a mic, which mic do you use?

Thanks in advance!

iRiver iFP-890

I got one of these and love it. I don't do a podcast yet but I am experimenting. I did find that if you install the UMS firmware v1.28 (so you can transfer files to and from the iRiver just like a drive), the recorded audio is encoded directly to mp3, eliminating the need to use the software that comes with it to convert the iRiver proprietory format over. You can set a wide range of encoding options as well. This is Windows related advice, I have no idea if the same applies to Macs. If you are on the Mac I'm sure someone here can help. Otherwise, if you are on Windows feel free to send me a message if you have questions about the above.

I use it with a mic...

and it works great. I used it to record my lady bunny interview.
You can use a handheld dynamic interview mic and the griffin mic cable from the Apple store. Just be sure to change the setting from line-in to mic-in in the iriver's setup and TEST before you go out.

thanks madge! one more

thanks madge!

one more thing-is a dynamic mic a mic that has its own power supply (like in the handle or something?)

Dynamic mic for iRiver

Yes. You want to use a dynamic mic rather than a mic that requires Phatom power. If you do, you can use the phantom power output and plug that into the iRiver. But I can probably assume that you'd want it to be rather simple for portability.
I recorded two shows and I forgot to switch it back to Ext. Mic. That sucks. Be sure to check before doing a show too, as Madge suggested.

duuuuddde, I just got an iriver n10 128mb yesterday in the mail pretty much just for podcasting, and its awesome. I took a chance buying it, because its kind of new, and there's not a lot of reviews, but hey, no loss.

its rediculuosly small, you can wear it around your neck, and the built in mic works amazingly well

only problem with it is that there's no ext mic attachment, but hey, it cost me 50 bucks off ebay, and the sound quality's prob just as good anyway

-the mic's on the bottom of the iriver, but you can still just wear it and talk, and it still picks up everything.

yeah so, if you're just looking for a portable recorder, go for this one, its crazy sick!
