This week on "Gay USA," we start off once again on the campaign trail where LGBT issues came up in remarks by Barack Obama in the Democratic debate and in his King Day speech and in a question to Hillary Clinton on the Tyra Banks show. On the Republican side, Mike Huckabee made what is essentially a gay rape joke in defense of the Confederate flag.
In other news, Cameroon is locking people up just for being gay. Andy will tell you how he was defamed in the New York Times. We will have an extended discussion on the staph infection scare and how it has been covered in the press, offering some useful advice on how to avoid infection. And we celebrate the best short documentary Academy Award nomination for Cynthia Wade's "Freeheld," about police Lt. Laurel Hester's fight for partner benefits in New Jersey as she also battled cancer.
We taped this week's "Gay USA" just before the news broke that Heath Ledger, whose breakthrough role was as a gay cowboy in "Brokeback Mountain," had tragically died at 28. We will talk about his legacy on next week's show.
